A review of three systemic retinoids in dermatology: acitretin, isotretinoin and bexarotene

Retinoids are synthetic and natural analogues of vitamin A that have various effects on cellular differentiation, cellular proliferation, immune system, and embryonic development. The present study reviews the history of systemic retinoids in medicine, the structure of syn

Oral retinoids and rexinoids in cutaneous T-cell lymphomas

Retinoids are biologically active derivatives of vitamin A modulating cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis and altering the immune response. They have been used for years in therapy of cutaneous T-cell lymphomas (CTCL) but the exact mechanism of retinoids' action is unclear. It is based on the presence of specific receptors' families, mediating the biological effects of retinoids on t...

Selective alteration of gene expression in response to natural and synthetic retinoids.

BACKGROUND Retinoids are very potent inducers of cellular differentiation and apoptosis, and are efficient anti-tumoral agents. Synthetic retinoids are designed to restrict their toxicity and side effects, mostly by increasing their selectivity toward each isotype of retinoic acids receptors (RARalpha, beta, gamma and RXRalpha, beta, gamma). We however previously showed that retinoids displayed ...

Retinoids as chemopreventive agents.

Retinoids are promising agents for cancer chemoprevention. The myriad effects of retinoids on biological processes including development, differentiation, homeostasis, carcinogenesis and apoptosis are mediated through their molecular targets, the retinoid and rexinoid receptors. Tissue specific expression patterns, ligand specificities, receptor numbers, their distinct functions and functional ...

Rexinoids and breast cancer prevention.

In this issue of Clinical Cancer Research , Li et al. investigate the chemopreventive potential of the retinoid, LG100268 (1). The application of retinoids to cancer chemoprevention has a long history which predates the identification of retinoid receptors (2, 3). Early clinical trials evaluated vitamin A derivatives, such as 13-cis-retinoic acid (13-cis-RA), all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA), and...
